Most challenging project?

Every project comes with its own set of challenges, whether it’s unexpected discoveries in the foundations or existing walls not quite matching the plans. But the most challenging project I’ve tackled so far was converting a derelict stone sheep barn into a modern family home, set in the hills with incredible views.

This one brought plenty of head-scratching moments: limited head heights, complex insulation requirements, and large areas of glazing that had to work structurally without compromising the building’s integrity. It tested both creativity and technical knowledge — and those are exactly the kinds of projects I enjoy. They push you to think differently and usually end up being the most rewarding.

Every project has taught me something new, and I always look forward to the next one with a fresh perspective and enthusiasm.

How long have you been making clients’ lives more beautiful?

Since 2019. I started out with a summer placement during my third year at university, back home in Dumfries and Galloway. I returned to that same practice in 2021, which is when my professional journey properly began.

Since then, I’ve moved to a second practice where I’ve worked on a wide mix of new builds and extensions across Scotland and the Islands. It’s given me a much deeper understanding of materials, planning, and construction — and strengthened my love for design.

Why did you get into architectural design?

I’ve always wanted to create something lasting — something real and meaningful that people can experience and enjoy. I love the idea of shaping spaces and designing environments that improve daily life, and I’ve always been drawn to the way architecture brings those ideas to life.

Growing up in older homes, I was fascinated by how layouts could be improved and inspired by the potential to transform them, whether through bold extensions or subtle tweaks that make all the difference.

This developed into a deep passion for improving Britain’s housing stock,
making it more sustainable and suitable for modern life.
Architecture perfectly blends my creativity with technical understanding. It’s a field full of
complex challenges-spatial, structural, social, and environmental. I enjoy solving
problems from multiple perspectives, so it’s the ideal profession.

Previous work experience?

My architectural journey began in earnest in 2021 at my first practice, where I gained invaluable insights working on beautiful castles and historic farmhouses. There, I honed traditional skills like hand sketching and physical modelling while also using AutoCAD to bring designs to life.
In 2022, I joined my second practice, where I quickly adapted to a more modern design approach. I worked on a broad spectrum of projects-residential and commercial including hotels, agricultural buildings, new builds, renovations, and extensions.
During this time, I became proficient in AutoCAD and Revit, producing detailed working drawings and gaining a solid understanding of how materials and building systems interact. I also worked closely with consultants, clients, and local authorities to coordinate projects and keep the building process as smooth and efficient as possible.
Today, I’m proud to be part of the Arkiplan team. Here, I bring my passion and experience to the table while continuing to learn and evolve as a designer. I can’t wait to hear your ideas-and help bring them to life.
